Kava, aka piper methysticum, is a small shrub native to the islands in the South Pacific. The root of the plant is used to make a non-alcoholic, euphoric beverage where it’s shared for both ceremonial and social occasions for over 3,000 years. Traditionally, Kava is served out of a coconut shell with loved ones or in a group setting. In Fiji, the tradition is to wait for everyone to have their shell filled with Kava. When ready, the leader of the group will clap their hands once and say, “BULA”. Everyone else responds with “BULA” and the group drinks their Kava together. Bula means, “to long life and good health”, in Fijian. Cheers!
